We started Spex Studios because nobody was making the writing app we wanted to use.
We're a three-person studio in Brooklyn, working on tools for novelists. Our first product, Spex Opus, is a desktop writing app — free, local, native. Our second product, Spex Slate, is coming this year.
We don't take venture money. We don't run ads. We don't sell data. The studio is funded by a few hundred writers who choose to support us each month, and that is — pleasantly, deliberately — the entire business model.
If you've ever opened a word processor and felt vaguely worse afterward, this is for you.
Vihaan Sharma
Used to ship word processors at a much larger company. Wanted to ship a smaller, better one.
Eleanor Voss
Has rewritten a text rendering engine three separate times. Will not be talked out of doing it a fourth.
Mira Khoury
Spends most weekdays at a small magazine. Spends weekends making Opus feel less like a settings panel.
